Processors can be designed in a variety of configurations. Standard processors include bottom sweep agitation with dimpled jacket heat transfer surface, #4 polished interior and exterior, tri-clamp inlets and outlets, and a sanitary manway. Processor sizes range from 200 to 5,000 gallons or larger. Typical options include outlet valves, level gauges, temperature probes, counter motion agitators, secondary agitators, baffles, and adjustable leveling feet.
Sanitary process equipment is designed to meet the stringent requirements of USDA, FDA, and 3A standards. During design, the utmost concern for sanitary construction is taken to eliminate crevices and other difficult to clean areas. Most sanitary process tanks are polished #4 or #7 on the interior and #4 on the exterior. Custom Metalcraft also insures stringent quality control of these items by keeping documented records of welding, material certifications and non-destructive exam (NDE) records. These units can be equipped with agitation, temperature and pressure probes, level gauges, clean-in-place systems (CIP), sanitary manways and outlet valves.
Reactors
Reactors for chemical processing can be designed in a variety of materials, thicknesses, finishes and support configurations. Most reactors include heat transfer on the sidewall and bottom head, and both the tank and heat transfer can be ASME code stamped. As with other pressure vessels, reactors can be designed for pressures over 100 psig and full vacuum. A variety of custom built manways and fittings can be added, as well as outlet valves, temperature and pressure probes, and specialized fittings.
Agitation
Agitation can be configured for many types product including milks and cheeses, vegetable pastes, cosmetic products, greases and oils, and liquid/dry material combinations. Most agitators are designed for variable speed, with a combination of baffles and mixing styles to suit the process/product. Agitation can also be used in combination with heat transfer to decrease batch cycle times. Special scraping blades can be specified as an option to eliminate burning of material on the sidewall or bottom head.
Sanitary Hinges and Covers
For open top tanks, our standard sanitary hinge design is effective for ease of use and cleaning. Hinged tops can be half fixed/ half open or double hinged. Hinged covers can be designed to be locked when open or closed, and typically include handles. Sealing gaskets can also be added as an option.
Ladders and Platforms
Personnel movement and protection equipment such as ladders, platforms, safety cages and handrails can be specified on almost any tank. All ladders and platforms are designed per OSHA or other jurisdictional codes (as required), and can also be designed to be removable. Ladders and platforms can be fabricated from stainless steel, painted carbon steel, hot dip galvanized carbon steel, and fiberglass.
Dimple Jacket Heat Transfer
Dimple Jacket is the most cost effective, lease expensive in the design configuration of both HTS and tank. It has good performance for relatively high pressures and temperature extremes, such as steam, due to turbulent flow creating better heat transfer efficiency. Pressure drop is greater with dimpled type for fluids, usually around 10 psig, up to 50 GPM flow rate, although is not recommended for higher flows. Dimple is recommended for operating pressures up to 150 psig @ -320° thru +400° F, and is normally recommended for a maximum of 4-5 foot shell height so as to maximize performance.
Half Pipe Heat Transfer
Half Pipe heat transfer has good flow rates with minimal pressure drop. Recommended for water, oil or glycol type fluids at up to 100 GPM and pressures up to 200 psig @ -320° thru +500° F, half pipe is also good for cyclic heat transfer conditions, such steam and water, and is resistant to stress cracking. While half pipe is more expensive than dimpled heat transfer surface, it is less expensive than open jackets. Half pipe jackets can be formed from 1-1/2” to 4” diameter pipe.
Coils and Open Jackets
Open jackets are the most expensive of the heat transfer types, typically recommended on smaller vessels such as 18” diameter or less. Open jackets are suitable for higher flow rates with low-pressure drop. For larger tanks however, lower velocities and poorer heat transfer coefficients are typical.
Coils can be added to almost any tank, and used for heating, cooling, or thermal recovery. Coils can be formed from 1-1/2” to 4” diameter pipe.
Hemispherical Kettles
Our line of hemispherical kettles and process tanks can include options for atmospheric as well as pressure operation. Hemispherical heads can be formed in any diameter from 12” to168”, and from any available material or finish. Agitation such as side and bottom scrape, as well as clamp on mounts, top mounts are optional. Heat transfer, including dimple jacket, is available for this style of vessel as well.
Special Tanks
Special tanks can be of either round or square construction. These tanks are ideal for bulk liquid storage, dairy production, or temporary storage. Square tanks can be designed to maximize floor space, and can also be designed to be stackable. Specialty tanks can range in size from 5 to 10,000 gallons, and be constructed from all types of stainless steel or alloy material, in all available finishes. Custom agitation, heat transfer and specialty access and fittings can also be specified.
Horizontal Tanks
Custom Metalcraft is proud of our ability to design and construct horizontal tanks for all industries. These tanks can be designed for atmospheric or high-pressure application, and can be ASME code stamped. Horizontal tanks can include heat transfer, agitation, insulation, and special fittings. Electric heating elements can also be supplied. Typical supports for horizontal tanks include saddles or legs. |
